What a Beautiful Shade of Gray

Through my internship with HEY, I’ve gained a wonderful mentor and friend named Gail. Originally, our relationship was formed with the objective of having Gail take me under her wing and introducing me to HEY’s board meeting procedures. Fortunately for me, our relationship has extended beyond that awkward formal setting and we’ve become closer in our personal lives. During our time together I do most of the talking, but Gail listens and is always ready with heartfelt and experienced advice.

Recently, Gail and I had dinner together and we discussed the possibility that life is less black and white than most chalk it up to be. For the most part, we believe, that life is lived in varying shades of gray. Coming to this resolution has offered me a little bit of comfort in this past week. I’m especially guilty of getting caught up in “all of nothing” thinking; Gail offered me a valuable reality check.

Our whole conversation started with a story of Gail telling me of a documentary she had helped collaborate on, about Hurricane Katrina. Gail works for HUD, and in 2005, was assigned work in New Orleans directly related to Katrina and Rita. Without giving too much else away, I’m just going to post the link to the documentary and hope that you’ll be interested enough to watch it. It’s a beautiful story of an 82 year old man who stayed in New Orleans after Katrina to rebuild his home with his own two hands. If you stick it out until the end, you might be blessed with the epiphany that we all live, walk and breathe in a world that is a most beautiful shade of gray.

It’s seems like haven’t posted forever. The detox is underway and going well. I’ve lost more weight than I expected to, so I’m warping the menu plan a bit to prevent any further weight loss.

School also started this week, so far, I haven’t got into any of the classes that I need to graduate (namely: organic chemistry), but not to fret my darlings, I have the gift of persistence and I have a few favors that I haven’t called in yet.

“T-24″ or, “Disaster Strikes”.

I’m a rather optimistic person, but today has been one disaster after the next.

In order of occurrence:

A. Dirk’s ER vet visit.

B. Being late to work (as a result of Disaster A.).

C. Fighting with Scott (See Disasters A and B).

D. Puke on BART.

E. Finding out what was wrong with Dirk. If you want to know, ask me, it’s THAT disturbing.

F. Traffic.

G. All of the avocados that I needed for guacamole going bad.

H. Scott putting an entire habenero pepper in the salsa (OK, the faces he made after sampling it made me smile).

I. Burning my mexican rice.

J. Making dry chicken.

and

K. Having no clue how to use spell check on a Mac.

“T-Minus 25″ or, “Erika Wants a Steak”.

Day three.
No wheat.
No dairy.
No mercy.

Wasn’t bad until the smell of pot stickers fought their way through the doors of the office earlier this afternoon. The image of a big fat burger dripping with fat, drenched in cheese with a side of crunchy french fries hit me. It’s all OK, we’re staying strong over here. Scott and I made a tasty allergen-free dinner.

The program gets harder in 2 days.
Keep an eye out.

T-Minus 28.

So at the end of the year, my boss, Dr. Thomas decided that it would be a good idea to ring in the new year with an office wide detoxification program. Being a proud student of dietetics, I’m in love with the idea.

After telling Scott about our plans, he willingly decided (OK-I forced him) to jump on board. Everyone in the office seems to be starting on different days. Scott and I chose Monday (tomorrow) to start. Most of the people in the office have opted for the 10 day plan, but a few of us (including Scott and myself) are doing a 28 day plan.

For days 1-6 we are going to be eliminating potentially allergenic foods: refined sugars, artificial coloring/flavoring/sweeteners, caffeine, gluten, red meat, shellfish, soy, corn, eggs and dairy products while taking some sort of a powdered supplement. From what I understand (correct me if I’m wrong, please) the theory behind all of this is, if we take out these foods and slowly reintroduce them later, we can see if our bodies have developed allergies to them.

Does that make any sense?

Yeah-I think I need to ask for a little clarification.

The point to all of this being, that if you, dear reader, choose to visit me in the next four weeks and I’ve written about how I’d kill for a deep fried twinkie, you’ll know why. I’m turning my body into a science experiment for your reading pleasure. *evil cackle*

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to go pack up the rest of the contraband food in my pantry.
